Suzie Hicks the Climate Chick and Sprout

Suzie Hicks, a climate activist and educator, is teaming up with a fluffy green puppet named Sprout to educate children about human-caused climate change.

Combining Entertainment and Climate Science

Suzie Hicks’ interest in taking care of the planet began when they were a child, participating in activities like composting and collecting used batteries for recycling with their dad. Hicks earned an undergraduate degree in theater and film but later pursued a master’s degree in climate science. They used their passion for both science and performance to teach kids about ocean science and its connection to human-caused climate change during a summer internship at an aquarium in 2017.

Role Models and Influences

Hicks cites Bill Nye the Science Guy as a huge role model, who helped them develop a love for science as a child. This inspiration led Hicks to create the YouTube series “Suzie Hicks the Climate Chick and Sprout,” which combines entertainment and climate science.

  • Hicks’ passion for science and performance led them to develop a show that teaches kids about climate change in a fun and engaging way.
  • The series is tailored for children ages 4 to 8, making it accessible to a young audience.

The Climate Change Media Landscape for Kids

While there are a few climate change-related offerings for kids, the media landscape has not kept up with public demand. A study from the Aspen Institute shows that there is a need for more age-appropriate information about climate change and solutions in children’s media.

  1. nearly 70% of parents and caregivers surveyed believe children’s media should include age-appropriate information about climate change.
  2. nearly 75% agree that children’s media should include climate solutions.
  3. However, less than 2% of children’s educational and nature-themed TV series contain climate change content.

Trailblazing and Recognition

Hicks is starting to gain recognition for their work, including appearing on the climate media company Grist’s Fifty Climate Leaders to Watch list in 2024 and the climate change storytelling agency Pique Action’s 2025 Climate Creators to Watch list.

“I oscillate between ‘Oh my God, we’re doomed’ and ‘A better world is possible’ — and I want more people to oscillate towards ‘a better world is possible.'” — Suzie Hicks

A Message from Suzie Hicks

“I had so much fun during that internship that my boss was like, ‘You’re pretty funny. You should have a show,’ ” Hicks said. “And ever since then, I’ve kind of had the bug for making TV about climate.”

“The reason that I talk to young kids is, what a glorious opportunity to build a better future,” Hicks said. “I’m hoping that I can help kids love climate science and love the earth.”

A Crowdsourced Funding Effort

Hicks is currently crowdsourcing almost all of the show’s funding. This has been a challenging but rewarding experience for them.

“I’m just bushwhacking my way, hoping that it’s going to work out and that some good comes of it,” Hicks said.

Charisse Sims’ Take on the Show

Charisse Sims, a teacher and parent of six kids in Los Angeles, praised the show for making climate science approachable and fun.
“Scientists sometimes want to use big words, and you just don’t understand what they’re talking to you about,” Sims said.

“But with Suzie, you understand what you can do,” Sims added.

A New Generation of Climate Champions

Suzie Hicks the Climate Chick and Sprout is part of a growing movement of climate activists and educators who are working to educate children about climate change.
