Climate Change and the Fate of Charlestown’s Breachway Restoration Project

The Unexpected Turn of Events

On June 4, Charlestown received a letter from Representative Magaziner’s office informing us that the CDS grant application for the Breachway restoration was no longer under consideration. This news came as a shock to the town, as the project had been a top priority for the community. The letter explained that the change in climate resiliency policies at the national level had led to this decision. The town had submitted its request for $8.5 million, but unfortunately, it was denied. However, the town is still hopeful that an amended request for $7 million will be considered. Fingers crossed that some funding will be allocated for this vital restoration project, which is essential to the town and community.

A Call to Action

If you know someone with Republican representation, it is essential to encourage them to call their Senators and Representatives about the change in climate policy. Climate destruction is a reality that affects us all, regardless of party affiliation. It is crucial to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and to demand that they take concrete steps to address this pressing issue.

No Kings/Kick Out the Clowns Protest

On June 14, 2025, a protest is scheduled to take place in Westerly, at 248 Post Rd, in the old Benny’s Parking Lot. The event will begin at 12:00 pm and will feature a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. The protest is a response to the erosion of democratic values and the threats to free speech, detention of people for their political views, and the defying of the courts. It is also Flag Day, so attendees are encouraged to bring their flags. To RSVP and for more information, click below.
