Outlook for 2025 : Strengthening the Foundations of Children Futures

Children’s lives are being ravaged by two major crises: climate change and economic inequality.

The consequences of inaction will be catastrophic for the world’s children.

The Growing Threat of Climate Change

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and its impact on children is particularly devastating. Rising temperatures, more frequent natural disasters, and unpredictable weather patterns are all taking a toll on young lives. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to their age, health, and limited ability to adapt. Children are more susceptible to heat stress, respiratory problems, and other health issues related to extreme weather events. Climate change is also affecting children’s mental health, with increased anxiety and stress levels due to the uncertainty and unpredictability of their environment. Furthermore, climate change is limiting children’s access to clean water, nutritious food, and safe shelter, exacerbating existing inequalities and vulnerabilities.

The Economic Crisis and Its Consequences

The economic crisis is another major threat to children’s well-being.

Resilience is not just about bouncing back, but about thriving in the face of uncertainty.

Resilience is not just about being able to bounce back from adversity, but also about being able to adapt and thrive in the face of uncertainty.

The Resilience Crisis

The world is facing a crisis of resilience. More than one in six children now live in areas affected by conflict, displacement, or poverty. This is the highest number of conflicts since World War II. The consequences of this crisis are far-reaching, affecting not only the individuals but also the communities and societies as a whole.

The Impact on Children

Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of conflict and poverty. They are often forced to grow up in environments where basic needs are not met, and where violence and trauma are a constant presence. This can have long-lasting effects on their physical and mental health, education, and overall well-being. Children who experience conflict and poverty are more likely to:

    • Suffer from physical and mental health problems
    • Have lower educational attainment
    • Experience higher rates of poverty and unemployment
    • Be more likely to engage in violent behavior
    • The Importance of Resilience

Resilience is not just about being able to bounce back from adversity, but also about being able to adapt and thrive in the face of uncertainty.

The Impact of Debt Distress on Children

Debt distress affects not only governments but also the most vulnerable populations, including children. The consequences of debt distress on children are far-reaching and devastating.

Climate change’s impact on children and the need for a low-carbon financial system.

The Importance of Climate Action for Children

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and its impact on children is particularly concerning. Rising temperatures, more frequent natural disasters, and unpredictable weather patterns are just a few of the consequences of climate change that children are already experiencing. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, it is essential to prioritize the needs and well-being of children.

The Role of the Global Financial System

The global financial system plays a critical role in addressing climate change. The system’s framework, policies, and practices have a significant impact on the environment and the economy. Strengthening legally backed climate reporting and monitoring is essential to ensure that the financial system is working towards a low-carbon future.

Key Components of Climate-Resilient Financial Systems

    • Green finance: The integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into financial decision-making to promote sustainable development.

The Role of DPI in Advancing Children’s Well-being

DPI can facilitate the delivery of essential services to children, such as healthcare, education, and social services, by providing a platform for data exchange and coordination. This can lead to improved outcomes for children, including better health, education, and social well-being.

Key Benefits of DPI for Children’s Well-being

    • Improved access to services: DPI can help ensure that children have access to essential services, such as healthcare and education, regardless of their geographical location or socio-economic status. Enhanced coordination: DPI can facilitate coordination among different service providers, ensuring that children receive a comprehensive and coordinated approach to their care. Data-driven decision-making: DPI can provide valuable insights and data, enabling policymakers and service providers to make informed decisions that benefit children.

The Importance of Aligning Global and National Priorities

In today’s interconnected world, the well-being of children is inextricably linked to the success of nations. As the global community continues to grapple with the challenges of poverty, inequality, and climate change, it is imperative that we prioritize the rights and needs of children.
