Nigeria to Host Major Climate Action and Just Energy Transition Workshop

The African continent is currently witnessing a surge in climate-related challenges, with devastating effects on the environment, economy, and human well-being. In response to this pressing issue, Nigeria is set to host a major workshop on Climate Action and Just Energy Transition in Abuja early this week. The workshop, which is being organised by a consortium of prominent institutions, aims to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government leaders, private sector stakeholders, civil society organisations, and international partners. The event is expected to provide a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and the development of a coordinated national framework to drive low-emission growth, mobilise climate finance, and ensure a just, inclusive energy transition. The workshop’s core objective is to explore how Nigeria can develop its own Country Platform for Climate Action (CPCA), a framework that will enable the country to take a leadership role in Africa’s climate future. This platform will be guided by the principles of equity, inclusivity, and economic sustainability, and will provide a structured approach to implementing a just energy transition. The event will draw lessons from countries such as South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Senegal, which are already implementing successful Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs). These countries have demonstrated the potential for a just energy transition to drive economic growth, improve energy access, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to Dr Olumide Abimbola, founder and director of the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI), the workshop is not just about knowledge-sharing, but also about defining Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s climate future. “This convening is not just about knowledge-sharing,” he said.
